Previously we covered the case of one Milwaukee woman who was involved in an early morning car accident on the day after Christmas. The woman's 10-year-old daughter died in the crash and the girl's 5-year-old sister suffered critical injuries in that accident. The woman faces felony charges in connection with the car accident and recently appeared in court.
The woman pleaded not guilty to her charges in connection with this case. Prosecutors say that the woman was intoxicated at the time of the crash and became distracted before she crashed her vehicle into the back of a parked semi-truck.
Authorities believe that this was a drunk driving accident and do not believe the woman's story that she only drank a half of a beer that evening. Blood alcohol tests show that the woman's blood alcohol level was 0.17 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit for intoxication in Wisconsin. It should also be noted that many studies have linked even small traces of alcohol with an increased risk of a fatal accident. The likelihood of a fatal accident increases with every incremental 0.01 blood alcohol percentage.
The woman's family and friends do not believe that she would have driven while intoxicated.
"I could not see that to be the case, not with her children in the car," one family friend said of the allegations.
The woman was placed under house arrest after she made her bail. She is only allowed to leave her home for hospital visits, court hearings and meetings with her lawyers.
